- 8 to 12
Science kits for kids by the age printed on the pack. Early lab tools, Snap Circuits from 8 and over, chemistry only at the labelled age, and an Arduino coding kit. UK listings checked 7 November 2026.
The editorial team does not test these kits at home. The age for each kit below is the age on the maker page or on the UK Amazon listing checked on 7 November 2026. Where those lines disagree, follow the age and the safety leaflet in the box. A customer review that describes a younger child does not change the label. Adult supervision on a warning does not lower the minimum age.
Stock and sellers move, especially before Black Friday on 27 November 2026. Counts below are the lines on the listing that day. They are not a promise of what is left now. Choose a new sealed kit. Do not choose a used kit or an Amazon Resale chemistry set.
Quick picks by the age on the label
- Early lab tools: Learning Resources Primary Science Lab Set, pink, item LSP2784-UKP. The maker page and the UK listing title both say ages 3+. Not for children under 36 months.
- Ages 4 to 7, chemistry-style: National Geographic Junior Chemistry Set, model CANGJRCHEMT6L. The UK listing says ages 4 and up, with a manufacturer recommended age of 4 to 7 years. This is not the Thames & Kosmos Kids First Chemistry Set.
- Ages 6 and 7: do not step up to a kit labelled 8+. Snap Circuits Jr Plus SC-110 is 8 and over. It is not a recommendation for ages 6 or 7.
- From age 8, circuits: Snap Circuits Jr Plus SC-110, then Classic Plus SC-310. Both UK titles say kids 8+.
- From age 10, chemistry: Thames & Kosmos Chem C1000. The UK maker page says ages 10 and up, with adult supervision. Chem C500 has no button. A manual on the maker site says it is not for children under 10.
- Coding, not chemistry: Arduino Starter Kit R4, model K000007_R4. An Amazon warning that it is not suitable under 8 is not a maker recommended age. Arduino does not publish a 12+ child age for this kit. The checked offer was Amazon Global Store, sold from abroad; Amazon states the manufacturer warranty will not apply. Confirm current import terms, condition, language and returns before ordering.

Age-label chooser
The adult-help column is an editorial aid from the kit type. It is not a timed test. Low means light setup. Medium means shared table time. High means an adult stays for the chemistry or the coding.

Early lab tools: Primary Science
The Learning Resources UK page for the Primary Science Lab Set (item LSP2784-UK) says ages 3+. The pink version (LSP2784-UKP) also says ages 3+. Both pages say the lab-style glasses should not be treated as protective lab equipment. Do not use them for a chemistry set that needs eye protection.
On Amazon UK on 7 November 2026, the pink listing title says ages 3+, and the manufacturer recommended age is 36 months to 7 years. The warning says it is not suitable for children under 36 months. The stock line was "Only 3 left in stock (more on the way)."
The multicolour listing for the same maker item, LSP2784-UK, does not agree with itself. The bullets and the product description say suitable for children aged 3+. The age-range field says 6 years to 10 years. The toy-safety block says a recommended age of 6 years and a manufacturer minimum age of 6 years. The warning still says not under 36 months. The stock line was "Only 10 left in stock (more on the way)." This guide does not recommend that conflicted listing for a child under 6 unless the packaging in hand is verified as the correct 3+ pack.
Learning Resources also sells a Deluxe Lab Set, listed as ages 3+ on the maker site. This guide does not add a button for it. The UK ASIN was not in the set of listings checked for this page.
Ages 4 to 7, and the line at 8
The National Geographic Junior Chemistry Set, model CANGJRCHEMT6L, is a different product from Thames & Kosmos Kids First Chemistry. On 7 November 2026 the UK listing description says ages 4 and up, the manufacturer recommended age is 4 to 7 years, and the manufacturer minimum age is 4 years. The warning says it is not suitable under 3 years and that an adult should supervise. The title describes 50 experiments and 20+ lab tools, using household items such as baking soda and vinegar. The listing was in stock, sold by National Geographic Science Toys. A separate leaflet file was not on the listing, so if the leaflet in the box states a higher age, follow the leaflet.
That 4+ line stops at this National Geographic set. It is not permission to buy Thames & Kosmos Kids First Chemistry for a 4 year old. Kids First is marked 8+ on the UK listing, and the warning says it is not suitable for children under 8.
For ages 6 and 7, stay with a set whose label includes those ages. Do not move to Snap Circuits Jr Plus, the 3-crystal kit, Kids First Chemistry, Intro to Chemistry, Chem C1000, the rock tumbler, or the science magic set. Each of those labels starts at 8 or older.
From age 8: Snap Circuits Jr Plus and crystals
Snap Circuits Jr Plus is model SC-110, made by Elenco. The UK listing title says it is a STEM toy for kids 8+. The manufacturer minimum age on that listing is 8 years. One product-information field reads "8 - 8 years". This guide reads that as a minimum of 8, in line with the title, not as an upper age of 8. A June 2020 Elenco summary puts SC-110 with the 8+ sets. The exceptions named for younger ages do not include SC-110. The listing also warns that it is not suitable under 36 months and that an adult should supervise. The 36-month line is a small-parts warning. It is not a reason to start at 3, 6, or 7.
The title says over 110 projects and 30+ parts, with no soldering. On 7 November 2026 it was in stock, sold by Cyntech and dispatched by Amazon. It was not shown as Amazon Resale. Age on this button: 8 and over, not for ages 6 or 7.
The educational Christmas gifts guide mentions Snap Circuits Jr at ages 8+. That is a different Elenco model from Jr Plus SC-110, and that page did not have a confirmed UK button.
The National Geographic crystal kit, model CANGLITCRYSTAL6L, grows 3 crystals. The UK title says kids 8 to 12. The manufacturer recommended age is 8 years and up, and the warning says it is not suitable under 8, with adult supervision. It was in stock on 7 November 2026, sold by National Geographic Science Toys. Delivery times on the listing change through the day, so check them again before you order.
From age 8: more circuits, a microscope, and labelled chemistry
Snap Circuits Classic Plus SC-310
The UK title says kids 8+, over 310 projects, and 60 parts. The manufacturer recommended age is 8 years and up. The comparison table on the listing also says 8 and up. The "what's in the box" line says 32 electrical parts and 2 project manuals, which does not match the "60 parts" in the title. Check the contents list on the day you order. It was in stock, sold by Cyntech and dispatched by Amazon. The under-36-months warning is a small-parts line, not a lower start age.
Microscope, age not confirmed on the listing
The National Geographic microscope, model NGMICROST, is described as up to 400x, with 40x, 100x, and 400x in the product description. Age was not verified: on 7 November 2026 the product details we could confirm did not include a manufacturer recommended age. The description has a choking warning for children under 36 months. That warning is not an age to start. Check the age on the box. The listing said it is usually dispatched within 4 to 5 days. That window can change.
Thames & Kosmos Kids First Chemistry, 8+ only
Kids First Chemistry, model 642921, is the UK listing ASIN B00B9BFU5Y. The title says ages 8+. The manufacturer recommended age is 8 to 15 years. The manufacturer minimum age is 8 years. The warning says it is not suitable for children under 8, and that it is for use under adult supervision, including direct supervision. This guide does not recommend it at 4, at 5, at 6, or at 7.
The title says 27 experiments. A bullet on the same listing says 25 hands-on experiments. Count the experiments in the manual rather than treating either number as settled. UK listing age is 8 and over, not under 8. The checked offer was Amazon Global Store, sold from abroad; Amazon states the manufacturer warranty will not apply. Confirm current import terms, condition, language and returns before ordering.
Intro to Chemistry, ages 8 to 12 on the title
Thames & Kosmos Intro to Chemistry, model 642525, has a UK title that says ages 8 to 12. The manufacturer recommended age is 8 to 12 years. The warning says it is not suitable under 8, for use under adult supervision. On 7 November 2026 the stock line was "Only 5 left in stock", sold by Fun Learning, which is a marketplace seller. Confirm the offer is new and sealed. The description text mentions 27 experiments. That number also appears on the Kids First listing, so this guide does not treat it as confirmed for model 642525. Read the manual in the box.
Chem C1000, ages 10 and up
The Thames & Kosmos UK page for Chem C1000 says ages 10 and up. It says the set is not suitable for children under 10, it is for use under adult supervision, and the instructions should be read before use. The same page says eye protection for the supervising adult is not included. The Amazon listing lists safety goggles among the contents and also says not under 10, with adult supervision. Have eye protection for the adult as well before the first experiment. The maker page describes 128 experiments and an 80-page manual.
The Amazon listing shows model 640120 and manufacturer part number 640118. Match the number on the box to the current UK maker page, and use the leaflet that comes with that pack. On 7 November 2026 the listing summary said there was no featured offer, and a note said the price was higher than typical. This guide does not call it in stock. If buying options appear, choose a new sealed kit, not a used kit and not Amazon Resale. Open the listing again before Black Friday.
Chem C500: no button
Chem C500, model 645571, does not get a button. On 7 November 2026 the UK Amazon summary said there was no featured offer. The Thames & Kosmos UK shop listed the kit as sold out.
This guide follows the manual hosted on the maker site: Chem C500 is not suitable for children under 10, and it is for children over 10. Other lines disagree. The Amazon title says ages 9 to 13. A warning line says not under 9. The maker product page says 9+. The age-range field, the manufacturer recommended age, and the toy-safety minimum also say 10. Because the manual says 10, this page does not recommend C500 under 10, and it has no buy button. Do not use C1000 as a substitute for a younger child. C1000 stays at 10+.
Hobby rock tumbler
The National Geographic Hobby Rock Tumbler, model NGHOBBYTUMBLER2, has a UK age-range line of 8 years and up and a manufacturer recommended age of 8 to 10 years. The warning says it is not suitable under 8, for use under adult supervision. The listing describes a leak-proof barrel, a shutoff timer, and about 226 grams of rough rocks. It calls the barrel noise-reducing. The machine is still meant to run for long timed stages, so check where it would sit. The UK plug type was not verified on this model. Check the plug on the listing before you order. It was in stock, sold by National Geographic Science Toys.
Arduino Starter Kit R4: coding, not a 12+ chemistry label
The Arduino Starter Kit R4 is model K000007_R4. The UK listing title and the Arduino starter kit page describe a printed book of 13 guided projects built around the UNO R4 WiFi board. A datasheet on docs.arduino.cc also lists a get-started section plus those projects, so count the chapters in the book you receive. It is an electronics and coding kit. It is not a chemistry set.
Arduino's own pages describe it for beginners and do not set a child age of 12+. The UK Amazon listing, checked 7 November 2026, warns that it is not suitable for children under 8 and that an adult should supervise. That warning is not a maker recommended age. This guide does not relabel it as a 12+ maker kit. The high adult-help score on the chart is coding help, not an age certification.
The Amazon warning (not under 8) is not a maker recommended age. The checked offer was Amazon Global Store, sold from abroad; Amazon states the manufacturer warranty will not apply. Confirm current import terms, condition, language and returns before ordering.
Snap Circuits Extreme Plus SC-760 is the larger circuit kit, still labelled kids 8+ by Elenco and by the UK title. It says over 760 projects and 80+ parts, and it includes a PC-interface cable. Four AA batteries are not included. On 7 November 2026 there were only 11 left, sold by Cyntech, usually dispatched within 3 to 4 days. Reviews on that listing describe children younger than 8. Those reviews do not change the 8+ label.
Before you order
- Check again before 27 November 2026. Black Friday can change which offer is featured, whether it is new, and how many are left. This page does not print a shop price.
- New and sealed for chemistry. Kids First, Intro to Chemistry, and Chem C1000 should be new sealed kits. Skip used and Amazon Resale for those sets. Read the safety leaflet before the first experiment.
- No open flame, and no unmarked chemicals. If a listing does not name the kit and does not show a safety leaflet, leave it out.
- Science magic set, 8+. Model CANGMEGAMAGIC6L. The UK listing says 8 years and up, with a warning not under 8 and adult supervision. The title says 100+ experiments and tricks. The bullets say the kit includes materials for 20 tricks, plus a bonus guide of 85+ experiments that use household items. It was in stock, sold by National Geographic Science Toys.
FAQ
What science kit suits a 5 year old?
For early lab tools, the pink Primary Science Lab Set and the Learning Resources UK pages say ages 3+, and not under 36 months. Do not use the conflicted multicolour listing for a child under 6 unless the packaging is verified as the correct 3+ pack. Do not use Kids First Chemistry. That UK listing is 8 and over, and it is not a 4+ set.
Can a 6 or 7 year old use Snap Circuits Jr Plus?
No. SC-110 is 8 and over. Elenco's 2020 summary and the UK title agree on 8+. Supervision is not a reason to ignore that minimum. At 6 or 7, the pink Primary Science listing can fit if the pack says so. Do not use the conflicted multicolour listing for a child under 6 unless that packaging is verified. The National Geographic Junior Chemistry Set is a separate listing that says 4 to 7. Follow its leaflet.
What is suitable from age 8, and what changes at 10?
From 8, the labelled circuit kits are SC-110 and SC-310, and the 3-crystal kit is 8+ (the title also says 8 to 12). Kids First Chemistry and Intro to Chemistry are also 8+ on their UK listings, with adult supervision, and they are not for younger children. At 10, Chem C1000 is the kit the UK maker marks 10+. It is not a stand-in for a younger child if C500 is unavailable.
Why is there no button for Chem C500?
There is no buy button. On 7 November 2026 the UK listing had no featured offer, and the maker shop listed it as sold out. This page follows the hosted manual: not under 10. The Amazon title says 9 to 13, and one warning says not under 9, but those lines do not lower the manual. If a pack is already at home, follow the leaflet in that pack.
Snap Circuits or a chemistry set first?
Snap Circuits are the simpler start from age 8: the parts snap together, and the UK titles say 8+. Chemistry sets in this guide need the leaflet and an adult nearby. Kids First is 8+, not 4+. Chem C1000 is 10+. The National Geographic Junior Chemistry Set is the one listing that states 4 and up, and that claim belongs only to model CANGJRCHEMT6L.
Which kits need an adult nearby?
Every listing checked here has a supervision or small-parts warning. The chart scores Chem C1000 and the Arduino kit at 3 because one is supervised chemistry and the other is wiring and code. Primary Science and SC-110 score 1 for light setup, and that score does not drop SC-110 below 8+. Crystal growing and SC-310 sit in the middle. Read the leaflet before any kit that contains chemicals.
